week 4 - Portfolio

Week 4 - Portfolio

Genre: Macro, Fine Arts/Creative Fine art photography

Why i changed

I was happy with my previous shoots but wasn't fully satisfied so after i saw Aaron Mcleans work 'Abundance' i instantly fell in love with the idea and my interpertation of this project which is a connection between us, Humans and Nature its self.

Plan for photoshoot:

I plan to try some Macro photography . I want to try and capture some connections between plant textures and peoples skin, hair, clothing, I want to have the connection that were apart of nature; That were made up of the same textures. I borrowed the 100mm macro lens and am going to shoot over the weekend. I plan to use the forest, a local duck pond and a reserve. I want to keep the dark background look, i could do this by picking the plant/flower and setting it up against a black backdrop. i want to use ambiant light as well.

inspiration

I want to take inspiration from Aaron Mclean's work, he's a New Zealander who has done macro photography. The images below are from his project 'Abundance'. I feel like Aaron was trying to get the idea that seeds, comparing them to people, Can continue to grow in abundance even though in this case the plants would die but the seeds go on and start again. Same with humans, if we die then our children will still go on in 'Abundance'

My Photoshoot

f/8.0 Shutter 1/160  ISO 6400

These photos were all shot on a macro lens, And because i shot them at night i had ti increase the ISO to its highest, 6400. I shot the plants under a tungsten light and put my camera setting on tungsten to try and create a more natural looking light, but i noticed alot of the photos came out a little noisy. I want to try and shoot earlier in the day but i like how the black background helps the detail and colours stand out.

f/9.0  Shutter 1/80  ISO 6400

This shot i tried to get closer to the leaf but the light and my angle were casting shadows which in some photos i like and some others i dont like, but i like the composition of the photo. i think i could of got more detail in the photo but the contrasting shadows hide detail and texture, which are key points i want to use in these shots.

f/9.0  Shutter 1/80  ISO 6400

This photo of a leaf on its side, I didnt notice it looked like a mountain till it was pointed out to me. i like the detail that was captured and how the light is almost  shining through the veins in the leave. I think i could of used a higher Shutter speed to maybe introduce more light into the photo but i like the dark background.

f/9.0 Shutter:1/100 ISO 6400

I wanted to try a differewnt point of view with this leaf, and because it was curved i wanted to use that to my advantage and i liked the way it turned out, and i like the detail that came out. By using a higher f-stop i was able to keep most of the photo in focus and keep the detail.

f/9.0 Shutter:1/100 ISO 6400

This photo is a close up of a hand, i like the detail and how you can see spots and small hairs, I used a high f-stop so that everything was in focus. This photo can easily be compared to a leaf cause of the same textures they have in common.

f/9.0 Shutter:1/100 ISO 6400

I like this photo cause at frist you cant tell what and were it is on the body, I once again used a high f-stop so that the whole image could be in focus. This photo could be a final comparison to the leaves as well.

f/9.0 Shutter:1/100 ISO 6400

I dont like this photo as much cause theres not much of a way to link it to anything but i like the contrast on the lower arm.

f/9.0 Shutter:1/100 ISO 6400

I didnt really like this photo until it was pointed out as a different point of view and makes you wonder what it is for a second. I like how you can see the detail in the vein. the photo below reminded me of this photo and could be a good comparison .

f/6.3 Shutter:1/80 ISO 6400

I like how this photo can be compared to the one above, as the nodes on the branch remind me of the vein above and the similar colour tones within the 2 images. This photos f-stop was lower which let me focus on the nodes more unlike the upper photo were a bit more is in focus.

  1. Hi Aimee
Can you talk some more about what you think Aaron Mclean's project is about? How does this differ from your own ideas for your portfolio work?
