week 4 garth badger

Garth Badger Visit Response

Garth Badger is heralded as one of the New Zealand’s leading image makers shooting across a broad range of subjects including advertising, fashion, sports and music.

Multidisciplinary, his visual aesthetic blends seamlessly between still photography and moving imagery. His work has aired on television across Australia and New Zealand, launched music careers, opened fashion shows and featured on websites worldwide.

Garth’s work exposes a distinct natural feel that allows his subjects to be captured in a way that feels confident and effortless. Central to his work is imagery that captures people’s stories and tells it in the most powerful way.

One film directors he mentioned was Lars Von Trier, who created quite dark and dreamy movies, but i really like his use of lighting. His lighting is kinda film novae which i like cause of the dark contrasting and shadows.

This image is kinda disturbing but i like the how the people stand out against the dark contrasting background. It makes me wonder what could really be under all those branches. This image

This image of his is very chiaroscuro and i lie how the more you stare at it the more people become clear.

I like this image cause of its mysteriousness and creepiness, You wonder what on earth could be going on.

What do i see?
- In these images i see alot of contrast and disturbing/creepy vibes.

What camera and composition techniques are being used?
- i feel like these images techniques have a different point of view compared to other images.

What ideas is this photographer working with?
- I feel like Lars ideas for his films were quite film Nouvau and suposed to make you feel weird and uncomfortable.

Response

I really like Lars use of dark contrasting images, My response images are based on his use of contrast and mysteriousness.

f/5.6 Shutter1/80 ISO200

I thought this image would be a good one cause of the mysterious point of view. I used a small F-Stop so that i could have the camera focus on a certain close area. I converted this image to B&W cause it reminded me of Lars chiaroscuro way of presenting odd images.

f/6.3 Shutter1/80 ISO 100

This image was a fire fit that i also converted to B&W to experiment and give it a Lars feel to it. Its cool to see how the fire wraps around the pieces of wood and i like the contrast.
f/8.0 Shutter2.00 ISO100

This image is from an older shoot which i thought this image would work cause its kinda creepy and you cant tell what is is at first. I took the same B&W feel to it cause i like the dark contrast idea Lars uses in his images.

  1. Hi Aimee. Can you talk some more about the Lars Von Trier film stills you posted? You can use the evaluation exercise questions to help with this:
    What do I see?
What camera and compositional techniques have been used?
How does this image make me feel?
What ideas is this photographer working with?
What genre of photography do these images fit into?
