Artist Research Week 5 - Wolfgang Tillmans

Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968) is a German fine-art photographer. Tillmans was initially known for his seemingly casual, sometimes snapshotlike portraits of friends (most notably, fashion designer Lutz Huelle and fellow artist Alexandra Bircken) and other youth in his immediate surroundings and scene. 

In these works by Tillmans we can identify that they are quite defused pictures, meaning that there aren't many shadowsand if so they are only light shadows. The light in the photos is evenly spread around the picture.

Week 5 Artist Research - Hellen Van Meene

Hellen van Meene, 1972, The Netherlands, is a portrait photographer who studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Most of her portrait images are of young teenage girls. She is widely known for her exceptional use of light and the sometimes awkward yet fragile poses. She works with girls that have no experience being a model and guides them in how they need to pose. She only uses natural light in order to keep fully concentrated on her models.

Hellen mainly uses direct light to create shadows and light in different places like the photo above were the young girl is in the sunlight but theres also shadows which contrast. Hellen also uses defused light, a little like the photo of the girl sitting on the chair, there are still some shadows but not as dark; the light is softer.

Week 5 Artist Research - Guy Bourdin

Guy Bourdin (2 December 1928, Paris – 29 March 1991, Paris), was a French fashion photographer known for his provocative fashion images. Bourdin worked for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He is since considered as one of the best known photographers of fashion and advertising of the second half of the 20th century. He set the stage for a new kind of fashion photography.

Bourdin was widely known for his use of complimentary and contrasting colours in fashion photography. In the first photo we can see complimentary colours; violet and yellow, and like in the last photo we can see contrasting colours; red and yellow. Complimentary colours are directly opposite each other in the colour wheel and contrasting colours are almost next to each other.

Week 5 Artist Research - Nobuyoshi Araki 

Araki was born in Tokyo, studied photography during his college years and then went to work at the advertising agency Dentsu, where he met his future wife, the essayist Yōko Araki

Having published over 350 books by 2005, and still more every year, Araki is considered one of the most prolific artists alive or dead in Japan and around the world.

Araki was widely known for his use of contrasting and complimentary colours. The first photo we see theres complimentary colours; red and green, and in the third photo we can see contrasting colours; blue and yellow. Complimentary colours are directly opposite each other in the colour wheel and contrasting colours are almost next to each other.

Week 5 - Focal length and Colour

Photo 2 out of 2 is my longest focal length 250

These 2 photos were taken from different lengths but cause i used zoom i could get the same position everytime. One difference between the two photos is how the background changes, in the first photo you can see more of the background but in photo 2 the background seemed to go narrow.

Photo 2 out of 3 was then shot at a focal length of 135. i had to moved backwards and fill the frame with the subjects body still in the same place.

Self Directed Colour

This photo of contrasting colours is in the morning, it was a rainy morning and the sky was cool. I used my Buddha's colour to bring warmth into this photo, making a contrasting photo.

This photo of contrasting colours is in the evening, the warmth coming from the slowly setting sun. I used a blue candle to bring coolness into this photo, making it a contrasting photo. I could of made this better by making the candle stand out more.


Self Directed - White balance and Other Settings

Below is the same still life photo taken with each of my camera's white balance settings, Tungsten, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, White Fluorescent and Flash. The items in these shots are cool colour.

I think i could of done this better because the photos are underexposed and the other balance choices all look similar.

Week 5 - Light- directed/reflected/defused

Photo 1 is using shadows to frame your subject using direct light. I achieved the pattern my standing under a tree and letting the light find its way through the leaves on onto my subject.

For this shot my subjects had her back to the sun and took the photo by its self.

This is the same shot but i used the silver reflector to brighten up her face.

For this photo my subject stood sideways so that the sun only hit one side of her face, no reflector was used.

For this same shot i used the silver reflector to brighten up the darker side of her face.

Photo 1 out of 3, my subject was standing sideways to the sun. Only one side of her face was bright cause no reflector was used.

Photo 2 out of 3 i used the silver reflector to brighten up the subjects face. I personally like the silver reflector in this shot.

Photo 3 out of 3 i used the gold reflector to brighten up the subjects face. I personally dont like the gold in this photo because it makes the subject look to unnaturally warm.

This shot was taken with a defuser, it took the direct sunlight off the subjects face but just defused how much light was coming in.

This shot was taken without the defuser, the subject was overexposed and she looks uncomfortable.

Week 4 digital tech 1 - Adjustment brush/sharpening/noise reduction

Week 4 Adjustment brush/sharpening/noise reduction - Self Directed

Before: This photo was really warm cause it was an evening shot and i used the adjustment brush to fix it.

After: I used the adjustment brush to lower the exposure a little bit and i used the basic panel to cool it down using the temperature bar.

After: I used the adjustment brush with a low exposure to darken the subject and enabled lens correction as well.

Before:  This photo was a bit overexposed so u i used the adjustment brush tool to fix it

Before: This metering photo, the subject is in the shadow and there is more light in the background. I had to use the adjustment brush to brighten up the subject in the shadow area.

After: I only used the exposure dial with the adjustment brush and just drew over the subjects face to brighten it.

Bernd & Hilla Becher inspired photo

Before: This Bernd and Hilla Becher inspired photo was a bit bright to look like an Bernd and Hilla Becher photo so i had to desaturate the background. 

After: I used the adjustment brush and desaturated the whole picture so it looked dull, i pulled the exposure down a little to do this.

Noise Reduction

This photo was a noise reduction. For this photo my ISO was 6400 so there was alot of noise in this photo, i pulled the luminance up a little and kept the amount low so that it looked smoother.
